How Do I Fix Windows Xp Stop 0X50 Error

I have XP Pro on my machine. No idea if this impacted things but clever housemate turned the machine off while it might have been backing up (it was turned off either way from the wall). Turned it on again and it boots to the desktop but then just keeps rebooting itself. I managed to turn the autorestarting off and get the blue screen of death. The error codes is says atm are:

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xAFE2B000, 0x00000001, 0x8058289E, 0x00000000)

pfff any idea on what to do? I was backing it up to reformat it and sell the machine.
